Internet Desk: Bangladesh’s dream of winning a historic test against England remained unfulfilled as the hosts fell short by 22 runs at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Cricket stadium in Chittagong on Monday. Requiring 33 runs to win, Bangladesh were bowled out for 263 runs. Sabbir Rahman remained not out 64 runs.

Ben Stokes took the last two Bangladesh wickets in three balls as England won a thrilling first Test, depriving their hosts of an historic victory.

It was the closest Bangladesh came towards winning a test against England in nine attempts. The hosts could manage just 10 runs to their overnight score as they were bowled out after 20 minutes of play.

Sabbir Rahman, the overnight half-centurion, was left stranded on 64 as the all rounder Stokes dismissed the other two batsmen in his second over.

Taijul Islam was the first batsman to get dismissed after he was adjudged leg before following a successful review. He added 5 runs to his total.

Stokes struck again after two balls as he had Shafiul Islam plumbed before the wicket. The hosts appealed against the decision of umpire Dharmasena. The review was turned down as Hawk-Eye indicated that the ball was hitting off stump, meaning the umpire’s initial decision stood.

It brought an end to a thrilling battle between the two teams in a match dominated by spin.

Stokes was named man of the match for taking six wickets in the two innings and also scoring 85 in England’s second innings.

The second and final Test will start in Dhaka on October 28.
