Why Yashasvi Jaiswal should open the batting for India in T20 format? | INDvsAFG

Xtra Time Web Desk: Indian team management faces a dilemma as they consider reshuffling their T20I opening pair, contemplating the combination of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli at the top.  It will mean Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has done well as an opener in T20 format getting demoted in the batting order or not finding a place in playing XI.

Team India Head Coach Rahul Dravid did not rule out the possibility of opening the batting with the two superstars in the shorter format during his pre match press conference in Mohali on Wednesday.

The potential shift puts the spotlight on Yashasvi Jaiswal again, who has been backed as an opener after the last edition of T20 World Cup. The left hander’s impressive strike rate and ability to excel in powerplays have made him an asset, ensuring India’s strong starts in T20 matches.

The decision to pair Rohit and Kohli or Shubman could compromise the aggressive intent in the powerplay, an area where India struggled in previous T20 World Cups. Jaiswal’s inclusion in the top three has not only brought a dynamic left-hander but also eased pressure on the middle order. The young opener’s knack for manipulating the field and scoring quick runs post the powerplay adds to his credentials.

If we look at the statistics, Rohit’s strike rate in the first six overs is 134.24 while for Kohli it is 116.75. Looking at most recent stats, in 13 innings, Gill’s strike rate in the powerplays is only 114.61. While Yashasvi has scored 430 runs in 14 innings in the powerplay at a strike-rate of 158.69.

In contrast, both Rohit and Kohli may lack the explosive start that Jaiswal provides. The upcoming T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA adds significance to this decision. Jaiswal’s impactful performances, including notable innings against South Africa, Australia, and in the West Indies, underscore his suitability for the role.

As the Indian team management contemplates its opening pair, the stakes are high for Jaiswal to prove his capabilities once again.
