Xtra Time Web Desk: Manchester United’s prolonged wait for a trophy continued as they lost in the penalty shootout to Spanish club Villarreal in UEFA Europa League final at PGE Arena on Wednesday night. The Red Devils have now been trophy less for four years. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side lost 10-11 on penalties to Villarreal in the final following 1-1 draw in Gdansk. United last won the title back in 2017 under Jose Mourinho.

Villarreal took the lead in the 29th minute of the match through Gerard Moreno. The Spaniard scored his 30th goal in all competitions so far. United equalized in the second half (55minutes), courtesy a razor sharp finish by Edison Cavani. It was his 16th goal in his last 11 Europa League this season.

Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli turned out to be the hero during a dramatic penalty shootout, first converting his own penalty before keeping out De Gea’s effort as Villarreal won its first ever major trophy.
