Kolkata: Former India captain Sourav Ganguly received a death threat from an organisation recently. In a letter couriered at his office (situated at his residence) the President of Cricket Association of Bengal was given a death threat if he travels to Midnapore (North). Sourav was supposed to travel to Midnapore on January 19 for a personal commitment.

Sources in the family have confirmed having received the death threat. Sourav has been suggested not to travel to Midnapore . The threat has come from some unknown person named Mr Zulfaqar Ali who represent All India Anti Corruption Committee. His registration number is Regd. MAH/339/98/THN. The letter is addressed to Mrs. Nirupa Ganguly (Sourav’s mother), Mrs. Dona Ganguly and Mr. Snehasish Ganguly.

Mr Ali alleged in the letter addressed to Mrs Nirupa Ganguly that one of the CAB sub-committee member from West Midnapore, Mr Asish Chakraborty has done fraud in Midnapore. Please do not send your son else he will face the consequences.

The letter was attached with a photgraph of the Ganguly family taken recently at the launch of the Sourav Ganguly Foundation at a city hotel. The photograph shows Sourav along with his mother, elder brother Snehasish and wife Dona. There were two other photographs of a dead man and a dead woman.

Asish Chakraborty, a Trinamool MLA from Garbeta also represents Cricket Association of Bengal from the Midnapore (W) district. Sourav, who was busy with the working committee meeting at the association today later said, “I was supposed to travel to Midnapore for a district sports programme at the Bidyasagar University on January 19. I have been told not to travel there because of security reasons. I have intimated the whole incident to the police authorities. They are taking all the adequate steps.”

According to Asish Chakraborty, “I am a MLA  from Midnapore (W) district and have been associated with this association for the past 4 years. It is a deliberate ploy to malign both me and Sourav. I was planning to organise a programme with Sourav on January 19.”

Mr Chakraborty further added, “Sourav immediately called me up and told me about the letter which he received. I suggested him to take legal steps and requested him to send me a copy of the letter as well. I assured him of taking all necessary steps to find out what was the objective behind it.”
