Rio 2016: Atanu Das progresses to the pre-quarters of Olympics in men’s archery

Internet Desk: Indian archer Atanu Das Cuba’s beat Adrian Andres Puentes Perez 6-4 in an exciting men’s individual 1/16 elimination round at the Rio Olympics on Tuesday. He will next face South Korea’s Seungyun Lee in the pre-quarterfinals on August 12.

Getting off to a good start, Atanu took the first two sets with relative ease before the Cuban drew level at 4-4. Two 10s in the deciding fifth set was enough to see him through to the next round.

In the individual elimination round, each archer shoots three arrows in a set. The archer with the maximum score at the end of six arrows is awarded two points. In the instance of scores being tied, points are split and the first archer to reach six points wins the match.

Earlier in the day, Atanu defeated Nepal’s Jitbahadur Muktan 6-0 in the men’s individual 1/32 elimination round.

Atanu took the first set with two 10s and a nine, 29-26, to race to a 2-0 lead. Shooting seven perfect 10s in the match, the Indian showcased a splendid performance to wrap up the following two sets and the the contest.
