Xtra Time Web Desk: Ten years back on this day in 2011, MS Dhoni led India created history at the Wankhede stadium by lifting the ICC Cricket World Cup for the second time. It took twenty eight years after Kapil Dev’s team won the Prudential Trophy at Lords. The Men in Blue were favourites going into the final against Sri Lanka at Wankhede. Dhoni and his boys broke a number of hoodoos in the Mumbai final: of home teams never having won the title, teams chasing having won only twice before, and century-makers in finals never having finished on the losing side.

Sri Lanka had an upper hand with Mahela Jayawardene producing a perfectly paced hundred and Lasith Malinga striking early to reduce India to 31 for 2. But Gautam Gambhir anchored the innings with a resolute 97. Surprising everyone MS Dhoni walked out at No. 5 instead of Yuvraj Singh – who was later voted Man of the Tournament – and delivered an innings for the ages.

Dhoni finishing off the match with a six over long on will forever remain etched in the memories of Indian cricket fans.
