OMG! IPL financially more valuable than the Premier League?

XtraTime Web Desk: An incredible stat comes out regarding the cash-rich Indian Premier League, as the latest report reveals that the IPL is financially better than even the Premier League in England.

The latest Global Sports Salary survey, in a report published by The Guardian, has estimated that cricketers in India’s cash-rich Indian Premier League earn more per match than players in any other sport.

The IPL, which is the brainchild of former BCCI vice-president Lalit Modi, was launched in 2008 and has been modeled along the lines of club football in Europe, specifically the English Premier League.

While EPL remained the richest football league in the world, with first-team squad players earning £2.99m a year on average, IPL players earned an average £274,624 (per game) despite only playing 14 games, surpassing second placed NFL (£138,354) and the Premier League (£78,703) by a huge margin.

However, it is to be noted that Premier League players play a total of 38 games in the league alone and also feature in other club tournaments such as the FA Cup, Europa League and Champions League. Taking the entire season into consideration, the footballers earn more than the IPL players.

In its eleventh year, the cricket league recorded a 19 per cent growth in valuation to touch $6.3 billion, compared to $5.3 billion in 2017.

According to IPL brand valuation report released by the corporate finance advisory firm Duff & Phelps, three-time IPL champion Mumbai Indians, with a brand value of $113.0 million, topped the charts in 2018; two-time winner Kolkata Knight Riders coming a close second with a brand value of $104.0 million.

The report also revealed that IPL players pocketed more on average by playing between early April and late May than EPL club Tottenham Hotspur’s players do across an entire season of English football.
