The Australian delegation was forced to run out of their building following fire at the parking lot and smoke prevailed all the staircases of the building. Australian chef de mission Kitty Chiller is going to meet the officials of Olympic village committee and IOC to state the details of the incident the team faced. Chiller on Saturday said she believed the fire started when a cigarette was tossed into a bin or pile of rubbish. "There's a lot of smokers - and this is my real issue - there's a lot of workers and contractors smoking in the village," she told. Also added, "The athletes' village is a non-smoking venue (but) there's a lot of people walking around smoking." The problem occurred after all the staircases and corridors of the building got filled with dense smoke. Later this was revealed that the fire broke out at the parking lot of the building. "What we have subsequently found is that the fire alarms had been silenced while they were carrying out maintenance on the building next door to ours," complained Chiller. The door of the Olympic village was opened on 24th July officially. However, the Australian team previously refused to stay in the village. The delegations of Belarus, Argentina and Australia earlier criticised the poor conditions of the facilities. Rio mayor Eduardo Paes apologised and acknowledged Australia's allocated building was the worst in the village. "It was not in good shape. That was a mistake of the organisation." He added, "They've got their building now, and I hope things go well from now on." The AOC issued a statement about Friday's incident, confirming that an emergency response plan was activated and "approximately 100 athletes and officials were evacuated in an orderly and controlled fashion." Other countries, including Italy, Argentina and New Zealand, had also expressed concerns. "I heard that there are many problems, like in the bathroom without hot water, or toilets that do not flush," said Taku Murakami, a member of the Japanese gymnastics team.
