Internet Desk: Krishna Poonia the Indian international discuss thrower turned out to be a real-life hero, when she rescued three girls who were allegedly being molested by a group of men in Rajasthan’s Churu district.

Poonia, who had grabbed a gold medal for India at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, was in Churu and was traveling in her car in Sadulpur area when she saw the girls being harassed near the railway crossing.

Seeing this, Poonia got down from the car to speak to them and the girls told her that they were being harassed by some boys who were passing lewd comments and leering at them. One girl was also allegedly hit by them.

“When I saw those two girls being harassed, I thought that they could well have been my daughters,” Poonia was quoted as saying in the media. “That made me go after the men.”

They boys tried to flee from the place on a motorbike when they saw the girls complaining. Poonia chased one of them down and called the police.

“The police station was barely two minutes away from the spot but it took the cops some time to reach and I had to phone them twice,” she said. “How will cops ensure women’s safety if they arrive late?”

She also took the girls to the police station and completed other formalities.

Poonia completed a creditable six in the women’s discus throw in the 2012 London Olympics and also become the first Indian woman to win a Commonwealth games gold in track and field events.
