It was a brutal way for Murray’s grand-slam year to end. He had won six  straight five-setters  back to last year’s French Open, and is renowned for his ruggedness in these long matches. But this has been one hell of a summer for him, delivering the Wimbledon title followed by the singles gold medal at the Olympic Games in Rio. In other results , swiss third seed Stan Wawrinka outlasted tiring former champion Juan Martin del Potro in four sets to advance to the semi-finals. Twice grand slam winner Wawrinka ended the rousing comeback effort by the Argentine at Flushing Meadows with a 7-6(5) 4-6 6-3 6-2 win to close out Day 10 at the year’s last grand slam. In womens’ division the American six-time champion won a gripping contest 6-2 4-6 6-3 in the Flushing Meadows night session to close in on a 23rd Grand Slam singles title. Williams, 34, will play Czech 10th seed Karolina Pliskova in the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows. They will be followed by Angelique Kerber against Caroline Wozniacki. Williams and Kerber are battling for the world number one ranking, with the American knowing that, to hang on to top spot, she must reach the final.
