Nepal’s Sandeep Lamichhane convicted of raping a minor

Xtra Time Web Desk: Former Nepal cricket captain Sandeep Lamichhane has been convicted of raping a minor by the Kathmandu District Court on Friday, December 29. The verdict comes after a single judge bench hearing led by Judge Shishir Raj Dhakal, which began on Sunday. However, it was determined that the victim was not a minor at the time of the crime.

The charges against Lamichhane were initially filed in September 2022, but the leg-spinner continued to play for Nepal while on bail awaiting trial. A lower court had initially ordered his detention, but this decision was overturned by the Nepal Supreme Court in January.

Despite the legal proceedings, Lamichhane remained active in representing Nepal in cricket matches. Now found guilty, a sentencing hearing is anticipated to take place early next month to determine the consequences of his actions.

This development marks a significant event in the career of the talented cricketer, and it will likely have broader implications for his standing in the cricket community and the legal system in Nepal. The guilty verdict brings a sense of closure to the ongoing legal proceedings and may impact Lamichhane’s future in both the sport and personal life.
