He was later said to be "in good spirits" as fears about his condition eased. Nicholas, who wasn't on air at the time, was carried out of the Nine broadcast box on a gurney by paramedics. Plenty of concerned onlookers watched on in the press area as the Englishman, who was sweating profusely, was helped onto the stretcher and taken away. Fellow Channel Nine commentator Michael Slater began the tea interval coverage confirming Nicholas had been taken to hospital with "abdominal pains". A Nine Network spokesperson said Nicholas was "in good spirits". "Mark is doing much better this evening and is in good spirits," the spokesperson said. "He wants to thank the MCG staff for all of their help, and the Channel Nine viewers and cricket community for their good wishes." It was reported that Nicholas was assisted to a local hospital by the network's head of sport, Tom Malone, and was in a stable condition. Reports claimed he had suffered a burst appendix, but this had not been confirmed by Nine. Nicholas had carried out his pre-game duties as usual in the morning, leading Nine's coverage and interviewing both captains at the toss.
