Debasis Sen, Delhi: Cricket fans in the country can still remember the tragic death of Raman Lamba. The former India cricketer died on February 20, 1998 after being hit on his head while fielding at forward short leg in a Dhaka Premier League match. It brought back memories of that tragic incident today at the Kotla as Sri Lankan opening batsman Sadeera Samarawickrama was hit on his head while fielding at forward short leg on Day 1 of the second test match between India and Sri Lanka. The Lankan batsman has been kept under observation.
The young batsman was hit on the crown of his helmet off a sweep by India opener Murali Vijay. He appeared to be a touch dizzy after moving to a deeper fielding position the next over.
On field Umpire, Nigel Llong immediately signaled towards the Lankan dressing room for assistance after observing Sadeera’s discomfort.
Later an update from the Sri Lanka team management said the player underwent CT scan of the brain and has been cleared by the medical team. However, the 22-year-old will be evaluated on Sunday by doctors before a decision on his availability is taken.
“He can come and bat straightaway (as it is an on-field injury), but we will be careful in making a decision,” team manager Asanka Gurusinha told reporters after the day’s play.
India lead the three-match series 1-0.
