La Liga: Sevilla edge out Real Betis 2-0 as La Liga returns

XtraTime Web Desk: Sevilla edged out Real Betis 2-0 to the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan as the La Liga made a return after being in the hiatus for almost three months. In a historic Gran Derbi played in front of an empty stadium in Seville, the hosts put on a show of full of attacking intent in front of the watching world. Virtual crowds and pre-recorded chants from fans were televised along with the live feed. The victory brightened Sevilla’s chances of a Champions League place as they moved four points clear of fifth place Getafe.

The home team almost took an early lead with Lucas Ocampos shot rebounding off the crossbar. Julen Lopetegui’s side dominated the proceedings in the first half, creating a lot of opportunities. The closest they came to take a lead was when Jules Kounde squandered a header from close range. Luuk de Jong also had the opportunity to open the scoring, but his headed effort also dropped the wrong side of Joel Robles’ left-hand post.

Sevilla took the lead after the half time with Ocampos converting from a spot kick as De Jong was brought down the bos by Marc Bartra. The Argentine played a key part in the hosts’ second too as his exquisite backheel flick found Fernando, who directed the ball into the back of the net from in front of goal.

Sevilla now have 50 points, six fewer than second placed Real Madrid. Barcelona leads the La Liga points table with 58 points from 27 matches, two points clear of Real Madrid.
