Xtra Time Web Desk: Cricket West Indies selectors on Saturday named an exciting 13-member squad for the first Test against India, which will begin on July 12 at Windsor Park in Dominica. The squad includes two uncapped left-hand batters, Kirk McKenzie and Alick Athanaze, who have impressed the selectors with their performances in recent tours.

Kirk McKenzie, a cricketer from Jamaica, showcased his talent in the 'A' series against Bangladesh A, where he scored two fifties. With an average of just under 40 and 591 runs in first-class cricket, McKenzie has earned his spot in the Test squad. Desmond Haynes, the lead selector for Cricket West Indies (CWI), praised McKenzie's approach to batting and his maturity on the field.

Alick Athanaze, who was part of the West Indies set-up during the South Africa tour earlier this year but did not feature in any Tests, is also in contention for his Test debut. His inclusion is a testament to his performance on the recent 'A' team tour of Bangladesh, where he displayed excellent batting skills.

Additionally, West Indies have included spin-bowling all-rounder Rahkeem Cornwall, who last played a Test match in November 2021. Cornwall's selection is crucial as the first-choice spinner, Gudakesh Motie, is currently sidelined with a back injury. Left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican has also been chosen to provide further spin options.

Notable omissions from the squad are left-hand opener Kyle Mayers and pace bowler Jayden Seales, both of whom are currently recovering from minor injuries. In their absence, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, son of legendary West Indian cricketer Shivnarine Chanderpaul, will likely open the innings.

The traveling reserves for the Test series are Tevin Imlach and Akeem Jordan, who will be ready to step in if any players from the main squad are unable to participate.

Overall, the West Indies squad for the first Test against India comprises a mix of experienced players and promising youngsters, providing an opportunity for the newcomers to make their mark at the international level.
