The 1986 World Cup winning Argentine legend Julio Olarticoechea who also played instrumental roles in Argentina’s success in 1982 and 1990 World Cup is now the head coach of Argentina U-23 National team. The tactical mastermind has come to India to play the Nagjee International Football Tournament 2016 and have been touched by the overwhelming reception he had got ever since he has come to India. XT) How are you feeling on your first trip to India?
Ans) I’m feeling excellent. Great place, great people. All are absolutely perfect!
XT) Playing 3 World Cups for Argentina is a massive feat.Was there any special memories with Maradona?
Ans) Winning in 1986 World Cup quarter final against England was a special feeling. In the same match the Goal of the Century and the Hand of God was scored. Best day in my life.
XT) Is there any dream of coaching in an Indian Super League club in future?
Ans) Of course, I would love to coach in India. Not only coaching, also I would like to work in youth developments.
XT) Do you think Leo Messi give priorities to his club compare to his national team?
Ans) NO. Leo Messi is the best player in the world and he plays always the same for Barcelona and Argentina National Team.
XT) Being the Head Coach of Argentina u-23 team, whom do u think have the firepower in world football from this squad?
Ans) There are some very good players with great potential. Mauro Ortiz is one of them.
XT) How much idea do you have about Indian football?
Ans) I don’t have much idea but now I am starting to know better and it is very interesting to have a long term project here. I would love to.
XT) What was the most precious moment in your playing career and why?
Ans) Winning the World Cup In 1986 against England with that great team commanded by Maradona.
XT) What would be the all time Allstar XI according to u?
Ans) I don’t want to put a best eleven. It will be not fair with many players. Impossible to have a best eleven, I played with some of the best players and I cannot choose amongst them.
XT) Who is a better player between Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo?
Ans) Leo Messi is the best player in the world and then obviously Cristiano Ronaldo. He is a fantastic player too.
XT) Are you interested in coaching the Indian national football team?
Ans) Coaching in India is now one of my priorities. A team or the National Team would be great! I’m ready to do it!!!
