Kolkata: India opener Gautam Gambhir, who was stripped off his state captaincy on Thursday, refused to make any comment. Gambhir, who was in Bardhaman to inaugurate a tennis ball tournament on Friday, did not prefer to answer questions on the recent captaincy issue. The senior cricketer was replaced by Rishabh Pant.

The Knight Riders captain was in news a couple of days back for coming forward to support former Indian boxer and Asian Games gold medallist Dingko Singh, who is fighting the toughest bout of his life. “It is really tragic the way we treat our sportspersons. It is our responsibility to come forward in support of them,” said Gambhir to reporters.

Talking about the forthcoming IPL X auction in Bengaluru on February 20, Gambhir said, “Let us first go to the auction and then will decide on picking players who we feel can strengthen our squad.”

The Knights will look to win the IPL X for a record third time. It was under Gambhir, KKR won the cash rich tournament twice.

“If we win this season we will be the most consistent team in the history of IPL. It will be the biggest motivation for us to do well. If you take the first three seasons in IPL, to win the marquee tournament thrice will be a icing on the cake for us.”

The Knight Riders captain feel Wriddhiman Saha can be an asset for the Indian team. According to Gambhir, “He has done well and has been making good contribution with the bat too. His gloves work has always been brilliant and if he can start contributing with the bat as well, he can be an asset for the team.”

The left hander got a bit nostalgic when asked about his innings against New Zealand in the 2009 series.

“That was my first overseas tour.  On previous tours the openers had not done well. We were 1-0 up in the series and had we lost that test in Napier we would have not won the series. It gives you immense satisfaction when you win a series after a gap of 41 years.”
