Xtra Time Web Desk: World No 1 Norway’s Magnus Carlsen was crowned the champion of FIDE World Cup 2023 defeating R Pragganandhaa of India in tie-breaker on Thursday in Baku. Praggnanandhaa made a superb comeback holding Carlsen with black pieces after 30 moves. The final went into tie-break after the result was 1-1 after first two games.

Praggnanandhaa’s journey to the final had been nothing short of spectacular, as he stunned World No. 3, Fabiano Caruana, in the semifinals via a tie-break. This remarkable achievement also made Praggnanandhaa the third youngest player in history, following in the footsteps of chess legends Bobby Fischer and Magnus Carlsen, to qualify for the prestigious Candidates tournament.

Praggnanandhaa also secured a spot in the Candidates Tournament. The youngster's determination, and skill have set new records. Turning 18 during the World Cup and becoming the youngest finalist and winner of the tournament is a testament to his exceptional talent. Additionally, his journey from being seeded 31st to making it to the final of the World Cup demonstrates his ability to perform under pressure and surpass expectations.
