Xtra Time Web Desk: Gianluigi Donnarumma was once again the hero for Italy as he saved two crucial shots from Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka in the penalty shootout as Italy beat England 3-2 to lift the EURO 2020 at the Wembley stadium on Sunday night. Berrardi, Bonucci and Bernardeshchi scored for the Azzurris while Harry Kane and Harry Maguire were on target for England. Marcus Rashford hit the bar. Donnarumma was rightly adjudged the player of the tournament. Italy was crowned champions of Europe for the first time since 1968.

The regulation time ended 1-1 after Luke Shaw gave England the lead in the second minute. The move started with Shaw down the left. He passed it on to Harry Kane who feeds to Trippier on the right. The latter’s cross finds a rushing Shaw who did not think twice to fire a pile driver from one bounce that left Donnarumma staring.

Bonucci equalized for the visitors in the 67th minute. A corner was whipped onto the near post from where a header sees it sail further towards the back post. There was a scramble as Verratti fires and Pickford spills it onto the woodwork. Bonucci, however, wins the rebound and slots it home.

England’s hope of winning a major trophy after 55 years remained unaccomplished. So does the ultimate redemption for Gareth Southgate. The England manager missed a decisive spot kick in the semi final of Euro 96. Once again England collapsed from the brink of glory in front of their supporters.
