Dipa says ‘Goodbye’ to Produnova. Find out why?

Dipa Karmakar after wining the trophy

Sabyasachi Bagchi: India got a new hope in Gymnastics when Dipa Karmakar qualified for the finals of Rio Olympic. She tried her signature ‘vault of death’ or Produnova, but just fell short to win a medal. She also received a major ligament injury. Dipa came back strongly after two years in the Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup held in Turkey on Sunday as she bagged the Gold.

“It as a big relief to make a successful comeback. I am happy with my performance as I was taking part in an international meet after a gap of almost two years. But it is just a start and there is a plenty of work to be done before the Asian Games,’’ was Karmakar’s first reaction after the gold medal.

She underwent a successful surgery, but Karmakar was out of action for two years, missing out on several big events including the World Championships and the Commonwealth Games. The injury also meant she was forced to dump her favourite Produnova routine because her body would not be able to withstand the rigours of the difficult routine.

Dipa spoke to xtratime.in through Whatsapp call she said, “I got myself back after two years. It’s a great feeling. I decided to give up playing the game once I got injured. I put up some extra weight but I don’t want to think about my pasts.

This result will give me much needed confidence ahead of Asian Games. I want to thank Sports Authority of India, Gymnastics Federation of India and specially to my coach Bisheshwar Nandi. Without him it won’t be possible.

Karmakar opted for Handspring 360 and Tsukuhara 720 with difficulty ratings of 5.4 and 5.6 to log an impressive 14.100 and 14.200. Dipa was miles ahead of her rivals in the tournament, with the silver medallist Rifda Irfanaluthfi of Indonesia finishing with 13.4.

After her injury she decided not to try Produnova as her coach suggested. She introduced another vault in this competition. His coach Bisheshwar Nandi said, “Only me and his family know how difficult it was for her to participate in this competition. Thinking of the future, Deepa’ s success was tremendous This win will double her confidence before the Asia Cup In my opinion she got her confidence back. If you do not take part in this level of competition for long, there is an obvious lack of confidence. It’s good that she got back her confidence in the very first match. Of course, thanks to doctors Anant Joshi, without him it wasn’t possible. Dipa followed my instructions very well. I am also happy about his fitness. ”

Talking about his signature Produnova vault Karmakar said, “People of the gymnastics world knew me because of Produnova. However, it was not possible to cope with this severe injury and to carry Produnova as there was a possibility of a further injury. So I learned a new vault. I want to continue with this vault in the future. ”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan, former cricketer Virender Sehwag congratulated Dipa for her incredible performance. Dipa was also very happy about the messages she said, “They are very busy persons in their own world. I want to thank them for congratulating me.”

She will start her training very soon for the upcoming Asian games. Karmakar started dreaming to win gold in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic.
