Croatia’s Nikola Kalinic refuses to take the runners-up medal, but why?

XtraTime Web Desk:
Controversial Croatian forward Nikola Kalinic has turned down his silver medal, after Croatia’s astonishing run to the World Cup Final.

The AC Milan striker who once upon a time represented Blackburn Rovers, was sent home in disgrace after the Croatians’ first fixture.

He has now stated that he does not feel he deserves his medal, despite the offer from his teammates, having not played in the competition.

“Thanks for the medal, but I did not play in Russia,” the 30-year-old is quoted as telling Sportske Novosti.

Zlatko Dalic sent Kalinic home after the Vatreni won their opening match against Nigeria; Kalinic was a substitute during the encounter.

It was the fourth successive international fixture where he had been left on the bench. But asked to come on in the 85th minute, Kalinic complained of a back problem and refused to enter.
