Internet Desk : Cristiano Ronaldo’s statue in his home island of Madeira in Portugal, has been vandalised just hours after his rival Lionel Messi won the Ballon d’Or for a record fifth time. The Argentine superstar’s name and his jersey number were scribbled onto Ronaldo’s statue on Tuesday night.

Ronaldo lost out on FIFA’s Ballon d’Or award to Messi who won three championships for Barcelona last year – Champions League, Spanish La Liga and Copa de Rey. On the other hand, Ronaldo, a three-time Ballon d’Or winner, couldn’t salvage a single trophy for Real Madrid last year. Messi’s name and his jersey number scrawled in red, had already been cleaned off the statue.

“It’s a shameful act committed out of jealousy towards him,” said Ronaldo’s sister Katia Aveiro, with pictures of the tagged statue predictably doing the rounds on social media.

Ronaldo unveiled the 3.40-metre-high bronze effigy of himself in December 2014 on the Funchal seafront, a few hundred meters from his own self-financed museum.
