Cricket Stories: The day Mithun Chakraborty did a ‘Disco Dancer’ under Gavaskar’s captaincy

XtraTime Web Desk: If you waft your ears in the folklore of Indian cricket’s connection with Bollywood, you will find a lot of stories which will increase your excitement regarding Indian cricket. But do you know how Bollywood superstar Mithun Chakraborty silenced the cricket fans with his trademark Disco Dancer celebration? Mithun Chakraborty has been a long-time friend for cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar.

After the 1983 World Cup, we know there was a controversial story on an exhibition match organized by Gavaskar at New Jersey of The USA. Mithun too was there in The US at that point of time for shooting purposes. Hence, Gavaskar called Mithun and requested Mithun to play for India against West Indies. Mithun responded and was accompanied by Tom Alter to go for that game.

Gavaskar, the Captain, all of a sudden threw the ball to Mithun and asked him to open the bowling. As we all know, Mithun played a lot of football but cricket was surely not that much.

Eventually, the first ball Mithun bowled to Alvin Kalicharan, was despatched into the boundary. The fans started booing him immediately by saying, “Disco Dancer nahi chalega!”. Drama happened on the very next ball when Kalicharan gave a catch to wicket-keeper Kirmani and got out. Mithun responded in his usual style by going to the fans with his ‘Disco Dancer’ celebration and told them ‘Disco Dancer hi chalega.”

Days go by, but stories like these never fade.
