78th Senior National TT: West Bengal wins Jayalaksmi Cup after 20 years

Kolkata: West Bengal Table Tennis team on Thursday created history by winning the coveted Jayalaksmi Cup after a gap of 20 years in Gurgaon. The team comprising of Sutirtha Mukherjee, Krittika Sinha Roy, Moumita Dutta, Anindita Chakraborty & Shreya Ghosh) beat Maharashtra-A by 3-0 to win gold in the 78th Senior National Table Tennis tournament. The Bengal men’s team however had to be satisfied with a bronze.

It was a dominating performance from the Bengal women players. Krittika Sinha Roy beat Pooja Sahasrabuddhe by 3-2 to give Bengal the lead. Sutirtha Mukherjee got past Charvi Kaule 3-0 while Anindita Chakraborty beat Shruti Ambrude by an identical 3-0 margin.

The Bengal men’s team had to be content with a bronze. The team comprising of Anirban Nandi, Arjun Ghosh, Sanmoy Paranjape, Sougata Sarkar & Surajit Das lost to Haryana by a 0-3 margin.

Bengal women last won the Jayalaksmi Cup in 1997 during the Jammu Nationals. Mantu Ghosh, Anindita Chakraborty, Kasturi Chakraborty, Mouma Das & Poulomi Ghatak brought glory for Bengal then.

This was the fourth time that Bengal won the Jayalaksmi Cup. Previous occasion when Bengal women emerged victorious were in 1993 (Calcutta), 1994 (Jamshedpur) and 1997 (Jammu)

Krittika Sinha Roy bt Pooja Sahasrabuddhe by 3-2

Sutirtha Mukherjee bt Charvi Kaule by 3-0

Anindita Chakraborty bt Shruti Ambrude by 3-0
