Sidney Lopes Cabral's Strike Against Argentina Voted Best Goal Of The 2026 Fifa World Cup

XtraTime Newsdesk: On Monday, Sidny Lopes Cabral won the public vote for goal of the tournament, adding to Cape Verde's World Cup history. Lopes Cabral's curling strike into the far top corner of Argentina's net was a notable moment of the World Cup, as the unheralded African squad had an impressive debut. His goal tied reigning champion Argentina 2-2 in extra time of their dramatic round of 32 match in Miami Gardens. Cape Verde would ultimately lose 3-2.

Lopes Cabral's goal was considered the finest of the 308 goals scored throughout the tournament, ahead of Eldor Shomurodov's elegant lob for Uzbekistan against Congo and Wilson Isidor of Haiti's thunderous rising drive against Morocco.

FIFA compiled a shortlist of 12 goals for public vote, which ended Monday.

Lopes Cabral's celebration also made World Cup history, when he broke loose from teammates attempting to catch him before leaping into the tribune to embrace his fiancée and seek for his mother.

Cape Verde defied both World Cup finalists in its four games, after goalkeeper Vozinha's standout display saw his team open with a 0-0 draw to stun eventual champion Spain.
