Having thrown away a 2-0 lead, Egypt's players were left devastated at the final whistle. However, much of the post-match discussion centered on the officiating rather than the comeback itself. Head coach Hossam Hassan did not spare the referee and VAR from criticism, claiming that Egypt had been the victim of a penalty appeal and a disallowed goal which, in his opinion, had a direct effect on the outcome of the match.
A few players of the Egyptian team echoed the same opinion as their coach. Mostafa Ziko, a member of the Egyptian team, said that the match was "clearly unfair" and that, in his belief, the Argentine players had been preferential treatment from the officials
The Egyptian team, nonetheless, gained a lot of respect and praise from the manner in which they lost their match in the on-going World Cup, for their fearless display to defend their goal, against the players of the team that were the current World Champions. The Egyptians progressed on the international football scene, but their World Cup progress came to a sad end.
