July 8th holds a very special place in the heart of a sports loving Bengali. It is the day they shower Sourav Ganguly, the pride of Bengal and an icon for Bengalis, with greetings and congratulations. "Dada" has turned 54 this year and the grand birthday celebrations began right at midnight itself.
His daughter, Sana, is currently in Barcelona and made a video call from there at midnight, giving her father love and best wishes. Today, his fans came to his Behala residence with offerings of goodwill. They showered their beloved 'Dada' with love, affection, cakes, flowers, and gifts. He celebrated the occasion by cutting a cake with his fans, and—as always—members of the media were present too. He plans to spend the entire day at home, celebrating by eating home-cooked food.
Amidst the festivities, the conversation naturally turned to sports. With the World Cup in full swing, all eyes are on the tournament. The 'Maharaj' was thoroughly impressed by how Lionel Messi led Argentina to victory after trailing against Egypt. He remarked, "They were down 2-1. When the ball reached Messi, he had two opposing players near him; yet, when you give a player of Messi's caliber that kind of opportunity, the inevitable happens. That is how big teams progress. France and Spain are also excellent sides; they are doing very well."
The discussion also touched upon the Indian cricket team's recent failures. Ganguly frankly admitted his surprise but remained optimistic. He said, "It is such a strong white-ball team; they will certainly bounce back. Let's see how they recover. Of course, such things can happen to any good team."
