Asia's unbeaten record at this year's World Cup has finally come to an end. Iraq's 4-1 defeat against Norway means that no Asian team remains undefeated in the tournament.
Before Iraq's loss, Asian representatives South Korea, Japan, and Saudi Arabia had all managed to avoid defeat on football's biggest stage. Iraq, however, could not maintain that record. Despite conceding four goals, they never stopped fighting throughout the match.
Norway secured a convincing 4-1 victory, and with Iraq's defeat, Asia lost its unbeaten status in the competition.
Manchester City star striker Erling Haaland made a dream World Cup debut, scoring twice to guide Norway to victory in this Group I encounter.
Haaland opened the scoring in the 29th minute. He received a precise low cross from the left flank and calmly finished into the net.
His second goal came with a touch of fortune. Iraqi goalkeeper Jalal Hassan attempted to clear the ball under pressure from Haaland, but the clearance struck the Norwegian striker and deflected into the goal.
Between Haaland's two goals, Iraq equalized through Aymen Hussein, who powered home an excellent header. However, Hussein's night ended in disappointment when he accidentally scored an own goal in the closing stages of the match.
Norway's other goal was scored by Leo Østigård.
The remaining teams in Group I are France and Senegal, meaning both Norway and Iraq still face tough challenges ahead. Many observers believe the battle for second place in the group will be particularly intense between Norway and Senegal.
