Kolkata: After India’s heartbreaking loss in the semifinal in the 2019 World Cup against New Zealand, there has been a lot of talk about the main problems of the team. Former national selectors like Dilip Vengsarkar, Kiran More, Sambaran Banerjee & others blamed the management for over relying on skipper Virat Kohli & his deputy Rohit Sharma in terms of scoring runs in the tournament.

This is the team’s one of the main concerns but another thing which is in the air that perhaps the time has come for BCCI to discuss the idea of split captaincy again. Back in 2014 when MS Dhoni retired from Test cricket the board gave the Test captaincy to Virat Kohli and Dhoni remained the captain for quite some time in the ODIs & T20Is.

A person very close to board said, if we need to do well in 2023 World Cup in India then we have to start our preparations right now and that’s why keeping an eye on the future the selectors too could look at Rohit lead the team in the 50-over format, on the other hand Kohli continues in Tests & T20Is. Many are saying that Rohit is a cool & calm captain and his winning record as India’s limited overs captain is 100%. And with Rohit getting the captaincy Kohli can bat more freely in the limited overs format.

“This would be the right time for Rohit to take over the mantle of captaincy in the 50-over format. There has been immense support to the present captain and the management, and it is time to plan ahead for the next World Cup; and for that, the existing ideas and plans need a fresh look. We all know some areas need a re-look. Rohit would be the right man for the job,” the source told.

After Kohli & Shastri both return from England there will be a review meeting as per CoA chief Vinod Rai. A lots of issues regarding the team will be discussed there.
