Xtra Time Web Desk : Team India batsman Shreyas Iyer is all set to make his test debut against New Zealand at Green Park in Kanpur on Thursday, confirmed stand in captain Ajinkya Rahane. With KL Rahul ruled out of the series due to a muscle injury, it was imminent for Shreyas Iyer to make his debut.

“Shreyas Iyer is going to make his debut,” said Rahane in his pre match conference.

Rahane’s own form has been a cause of concern for the team. His performances over a period of two years have been ordinary.

Speaking about his personal form, Rahane said, “I am not concerned about my form, it’s not necessary to make a hundred. I always think about the team, even 50 or 60 is important for the team cause, I always put the team first. I am very fortunate to lead the country, I am not bothered about what is going to happen. I am just focused on giving my best. When I am batting, I am there as a batter. The captaincy hat comes on when I am there in the field. It is all about what sort of game plan we have, what sort of strategy we have. I just like to keep it simple.”

With KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma along with some other senior cricketers out of the first test, it will be interesting to see that how the juniors step up to take on the Kiwi challenge.

“We are missing a few players but it’s a big opportunity for youngsters to prove themselves – this team is all about backing players – now, we are thinking about this series,” said Rahane.
