The contest saw India posting an imposing total of 357 for eight. Virat Kohli (88 off 94) and Shubman Gill (92 off 92) emerged as the stars of the Indian innings, crafting a formidable partnership of 189 runs for the second wicket. Despite a brief scare when Kohli survived a challenging caught-and-bowled chance early in his innings, India was in a commanding position, standing just seven runs shy of 200 when Gill departed after contributing 92 runs.

Hopes of witnessing Kohli’s second century in the tournament were dashed as he fell for 88, with Dilshan Madushanka claiming his third wicket. Shreyas Iyer stepped in to maintain India’s charge, becoming the third Indian batsman to pass 80 runs before Madushanka completed a five-wicket haul.

Sri Lanka’s response was disastrous, losing four wickets for just three runs within the first four overs. The early damage was inflicted by Mohammed Siraj, who dismissed Dimuth Karunaratne and Sadeera Samarawickrama, and then bowled Sri Lankan captain Kusal Mendis with the first ball of the fourth over. Sri Lanka struggled to recover, with only Angelo Mathews, Maheesh Theekshana, and Kasun Rajitha managing to reach double figures. Mohammed Shami took 5 wickets for 18 runs to see the Lankans bowled out for 55 runs.

The victory marked India’s seventh consecutive win in the tournament, with Mohammed Shami being India’s standout bowler in this match, finishing with impressive figures of five wickets for 18 runs, solidifying his status as India’s leading wicket-taker in 50-over World Cups.
