Sangakkara grilled by Sri Lankan police for 2011 WC final, sparks protests across the island

XtraTime Web Desk: Former Sri Lanka Captain Kumar Sangakkara on Thursday was interrogated by the special investigating unit of Sri Lankan sports ministry for losing the 2011 World Cup final. Sangakkara, who was the captain of Sri Lanka in the 2011 World Cup, was grilled for more than five hours. The incident sparked widespread protests across the island nation.


The Ministry of Sports launched an investigation into the 2011 World Cup final between Sri Lanka and India, following an allegation made by former Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage. On 18 June, Aluthgamage had stated that the 2011 Cricket World Cup had been fixed.


Former chairman of the National Selection Committee Aravinda de Silva and former opener Upul Tharanga has already given their statements to the SIU of the Sri Lankan sports ministry in the last couple of days.


Another former batsman and one of the mainstays of Sri Lanka cricket over the years Mahela Jayawerdene has also been summoned on Friday. Jayawardene was the Vice Captain of the 2011 Sri Lanka World Cup team and scored a century in the final. He will be the fourth cricketer to be summoned before the Special Investigation Division of the Ministry of Sports.
