Rohit Sharma can get promoted to test vice-captaincy; future of Rahane, Pujara hangs in balance | Report

Xtra Time Web Desk: Some big decisions are likely to be taken in Indian cricket when the selectors meet next to pick the test squad against New Zealand. Much will depend on newly appointed Head Coach of Indian team, Rahul Dravid’s vision in the longer format.

We have already seen a major overhaul in T20 format side after the poor performance in the recently concluded T20 World Cup. Apart from a few seniors like Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami being rested, all rounder Hardik Pandya was dropped along with Varun Chakravarthy. Both of them seem to be hiding their injuries and playing for the Indian team during the World Cup in UAE.

As far as test squad is concerned, for almost three years now, Pujara and Rahane have been going through rough phase. As a result the selectors wanted to draft in some new faces.

As per a report in TOI, Rohit could be promoted as the vice-captain if Rahane gets axed from the squad. There is also the possibility of seeing Shubman Gill bat in the middle-order after he lost his opening spot to KL Rahul. As of now, the team is focused on completing the task at home against the Kiwis, who have won just two Tests on Indian soil in their history. Their previous win came back in 1988 but Kane Williamson and co. will be eager to turn their fortunes
