PR Sreejesh’s unique celebration after the bronze medal winning match against Germany goes viral

Anilava Chatterjee, Tokyo: It was quite an emotional moment for Indian men’s hockey team goalkeeper PR Sreejesh. The 33 year old goalkeeper had to wait for 15 long years to make his dream come true. Since making his senior team debut in 2006, Sreejesh has established himself as the last wall of defence in the Indian men’s hockey team. And to make the occasion memorable, Sreejesh chose to climb on top of the goalpost at the Oi Hockey Stadium after the match. He was seen giving pose seated on top of the goalpost with outstretched hands, something that he will cherish throughout his life. For Srejeesh, goalpost has always been like a friend. It was like a temple in Chembur.

“Goalpost has always been like a friend. It was like a temple in Chembur. I keep talking to the goalpost. If the ball hits the post I tell well done buddy. Everytime I walk into a hockey field I pray to the goalpost. Even today I prayed after the match ended,” said Sreejesh talking to the media persons in Tokyo.

On being asked what does this medal mean to you, he said, “As you all know it’s been quite a long wait for us to win a medal in hockey for the country in Olympics. We had the good wishes of the entire nation. This win will take Indian hockey forward and will inspire new generation. I would dedicate this medal to the country”

It has been a bumpy ride for the Indian team on their way to winning an Olympic medal in men’s hockey after 41 years.

“It would have meant nothing for our effort, hard work and dedication had we lost this match. Everyone’s mind set was to win the medal. The players made tremendous hard work”

On being asked what has been the talk in the team after losing to Belgium in the semifinal. Sreejesh said, “We did not ponder over the semi final loss. Our focus was to win the medal,” said Sreejesh.

Drag flicker Rupinder Pal Singh said, “This is a best moment in my life. We had to wait for 10-11 years. Off course we aimed for gold. But finishing at podium was also good. We performed well throughout the tournament. It was a proud moment.”

Rupinder had some strong words for the critics of Indian hockey.

“Many doubted us, it did not matter what their views were and hope next time they think twice before judging anyone. All I can say is keep the belief and we will produce results.”

Lastly he gave credit to coach Graham Reid for keeping the team together even after the huge loss against Australia in group stage.

“The loss against Australia 1-7 did shake us but we kept telling ourselves we were not out of the tournament. It will depend on August 5. It was a good team spirit. Graham Reid made sure we stayed as a team,” signed off an excited Rupinder.
