Xtra Time Web Desk: Former Australia cricket captain Meg Lanning, aged 32, announced her retirement in November 2023, citing medical reasons for her departure from the game. Lanning, a celebrated figure in the sport, disclosed in an interview with the Howie Games podcast that her decision was influenced by a gruelling fitness regime coupled with inadequate nutrition. “I was over-exercising and under-fuelling,” Lanning confessed during the podcast. “It sort of just spiralled, and I was in denial, even though everyone kept telling me something wasn’t quite right.”

Renowned for leading her team to numerous victories, including the 50-over World Cup triumph in 2022 and four T20 titles, Lanning’s retirement marks the end of an illustrious career spanning over a decade. Despite her remarkable achievements, Lanning admitted that towards the end of her tenure, she struggled with maintaining balance and found herself consumed by an unhealthy obsession with fitness. “It became a bit of an obsession,” she admitted. “It was a way I could escape mentally. I would throw the headphones in. I wouldn’t take my phone with me. I really liked that because I felt like I was in control.”

While Lanning refrained from labelling her struggles as an eating disorder, she acknowledged seeking help to overcome her challenges, which also included battling insomnia. Reflecting on her journey, she emphasized the importance of communication and reaching out for support. “I’ve really started to understand how actually talking to people and letting people know can actually help,” Lanning remarked.

Despite retiring from international cricket, Lanning remains active in the domestic circuit, recently leading Delhi Capitals to the Women’s Premier League final. Additionally, she has secured a contract with London Spirit to compete in The Hundred for the upcoming season, indicating her continued commitment to the sport she loves.
