Xtra Time Web Desk:  India's star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who previously served as vice-captain during the Test series against England, will not retain that role in the upcoming first Test against Bangladesh. While Bumrah remains a key part of the squad, he will play as a regular member rather than as Rohit Sharma's deputy for the series.

Despite being regarded as a leader within the team, alongside KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Virat Kohli, Bumrah’s absence from the vice-captaincy role indicates a potential shift in team management’s approach. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the coaching staff, now led by Gautam Gambhir, appear to be carefully managing Bumrah's workload, possibly due to his history of injuries.

Notably, the team has not named an official vice-captain for this series. While Virat Kohli has chosen to step away from leadership roles, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant are considered future captaincy candidates. Shubman Gill, already vice-captain in ODIs and T20Is, has sparked speculation about his future role in Test cricket as well.

Bumrah has previously captained India, earning praise for his leadership in the rescheduled 2022 Test against England and the 2023 match against Ireland. However, with a captain needing consistent availability, Bumrah's injury history might pose a challenge to any long-term leadership role.

India's first Test against Bangladesh is set to begin on September 19 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, with the second Test to follow at Green Park Stadium in Kanpur on September 27.
