Xtra Time Web Desk: Retired IPS officer Sharad Kumar, known for his leadership of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) from 2013 to 2017, has been appointed as the new head of the BCCI's Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU). Kumar, 68, hailing from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, brings a wealth of experience to the role. His appointment was made official on October 1, 2024, following its finalization at the BCCI's Annual General Meeting on September 29. He will serve a three-year term.

A 1979 batch IPS officer from the Haryana cadre, Kumar will succeed KK Mishra, another former Haryana cadre officer, who left the post prematurely. Kumar's vast experience includes not only his tenure at the NIA but also his service as the Vigilance Commissioner and briefly as the interim Central Vigilance Commissioner.

In his new role, Kumar will focus on maintaining the integrity of the sport by addressing corruption-related concerns such as match-fixing and betting scandals. His previous work in counter-terrorism, particularly in dismantling terror financing networks and investigating high-profile cases like the Pathankot airbase attack, highlights his exceptional investigative skills. He is a recipient of the President's Police Medal for Meritorious Services (1996) and for Distinguished Services (2004).

During his tenure as NIA Director General, Kumar oversaw several high-profile investigations and operations. Kumar played a pivotal role in enhancing the NIA's capabilities and infrastructure. During his tenure, the NIA investigated several major terror attacks in India, including the Pathankot airbase attack by terrorists of the banned Jaish-e-Mohammed.
