Xtra Time Web Desk: Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed on Monday, October 7, that Sanath Jayasuriya has been appointed as the permanent head coach of the men's national team following their recent run of impressive form. Jayasuriya, who had been serving as the interim coach after the T20 World Cup 2024, will continue in this role until March 31, 2026.

In an official statement posted on their X account, Sri Lanka Cricket announced that the executive committee made the decision based on the team's recent strong performances in series against India, England, and New Zealand, where Jayasuriya was already acting as interim head coach. The board also confirmed that his appointment took effect from October 1, 2024.

"Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce the appointment of Sanath Jayasuriya as the head coach of the national team. The Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket made this decision taking into consideration the team’s good performances in the recent tours against India, England, and New Zealand, where Jayasuriya was in charge as the ‘interim head coach.’ The appointment came into effect on October 1, 2024, and will remain until March 31, 2026," the statement from Sri Lanka Cricket read.

The Sri Lankan side has seen a resurgence under Jayasuriya's leadership. His stint began with the T20I and ODI series against India, where Sri Lanka managed to upset Rohit Sharma’s side in the 50-over format. This success was followed by a historic win in the third Test against England at the Oval and a 2-0 series victory over New Zealand at home.

Jayasuriya's first assignment as full-time head coach will be leading the team in the upcoming T20I and ODI series against the West Indies, starting on October 13.
