BGT 2024-25: Virat kohli is suffering from this syndrome, suggests Greg Chappell! Find out what
Xtra Time Web Desk: Former Australia cricketer Greg Chappell has expressed concerns over Indian batting maestro Virat Kohli, suggesting that he may be experiencing Elite Performance Decline Syndrome (EPDS). Kohli, once renowned for his consistent brilliance, has struggled with form in recent years, scoring just 21 runs in his last three innings following a century in the first Test against Australia in Perth.
Since 2020, Kohli's performances have seen a significant decline, with only three centuries to his name over the past four years. During this period, he has managed 1,964 runs from 65 innings at an average of 31.67, a stark contrast to his previous standards.

Chappell, writing in his column for The Sydney Morning Herald, analyzed Kohli's batting struggles and noted a visible shift in his approach. "The first visible sign of EPDS is a subtle but unmistakable shift in a player’s approach at the crease. Kohli, once renowned for his domineering starts, has in recent years shown a tendency to begin tentatively," Chappell remarked.
Drawing comparisons to legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting, Chappell highlighted the importance of early runs for Kohli to regain his rhythm. "Much like Tendulkar and Ponting before him, Kohli seems to need a buffer – a score of 20 or 30 – before he can rediscover his flow. Reaching a score of 20 or 30 acts as a psychological turning point, helping him regain the confidence and fluency of his prime," he added.
Kohli’s Weakness Against Off-Stump Deliveries
Australian bowlers have consistently targeted Kohli's weakness outside the off stump throughout the ongoing series, leading to repeated dismissals in a similar fashion. Despite efforts to address the issue ahead of the third Test in Brisbane, Kohli once again fell victim to a widish delivery, edging it to wicketkeeper Alex Carey.
As the series heads into the fourth Test in Melbourne, Kohli faces mounting pressure to deliver. His inability to make a significant impact so far has raised questions about his future in India's Test team. If India fails to secure a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final, selectors may be forced to make tough decisions regarding the former captain’s role in the red-ball format.
