Xtra Time Web Desk: Sunil Gavaskar has voiced his opinion on the potential absence of Indian captain Rohit Sharma for the opening Tests of the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy due to personal reasons. Speaking on Sports Tak, Gavaskar stressed the importance of having a captain at the helm from the start of such a crucial series. He suggested that if Rohit Sharma misses the first two Tests, the selection committee should appoint Jasprit Bumrah as the captain, allowing Sharma to participate as a player.

"If you are missing two-thirds of the matches, then you should go for this tour only as a player. We will make the vice-captain the captain of this tour," Gavaskar stated. He further noted that had India won the New Zealand series, the situation might have been different, but the absence of a captain for the first match could disrupt the team's unity.

While Gavaskar’s comments have sparked debate, former Australian cricketer Aaron Finch disagreed, emphasizing the importance of family in such situations. "If you need to stay at home because your wife is having a baby... that's such a beautiful moment... take all the time you need," Finch told ESPNcricinfo.

Reports have suggested that Rohit Sharma may miss the opening Tests as he and his wife Ritika are expecting a new addition to their family, with cricket commentator Harsha Bhogle also hinting at the same.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy will begin on November 22 in Perth, followed by a day-night Test in Adelaide, and matches at The Gabba, Melbourne Cricket Ground, and Sydney Cricket Ground, promising an exciting series.
