Xtra Time Web Desk: The future of senior Indian batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be a key topic of discussion in a crucial meeting scheduled for Saturday. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar are set to meet with BCCI officials to review India's recent tour of Australia and assess the way forward.

India's back-to-back series defeats against New Zealand and Australia have raised questions about the form and longevity of Kohli and Rohit, both of whom have faced declining returns with the bat. Sources indicate the meeting will deliberate whether to initiate a transition phase before the ICC Champions Trophy next month or to wait until the tournament cycle concludes.

Champions Trophy lifeline?

Both Kohli and Rohit are likely to feature in the Champions Trophy, a format in which they have historically excelled. Despite limited ODI appearances in 2024—just three matches each after the 2023 World Cup—the tournament offers an opportunity for redemption. Kohli's scores of 24, 14, and 20 against Sri Lanka contrasted with Rohit's more consistent returns of 58, 64, and 35.

Test careers in focus

The discussion may also extend to their Test future. India's next assignment is a demanding five-match series in England. While Kohli managed 190 runs at 23.75, including a century in Perth, during the Australia series, Rohit struggled, accumulating just 31 runs in two matches. Their diminishing impact in the traditional format will be closely evaluated.

Additionally, Gambhir's coaching tenure will be reviewed, with emphasis on his plans for managing a smooth transition for the team.

Champions Trophy squad selection

Later on Saturday, Agarkar and his team will convene to select the Indian squad for the Champions Trophy, with India's campaign kicking off against Bangladesh in the UAE on February 20. However, the announcement is not expected until the January 12 deadline.

Fitness updates on key players like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami will be critical. Bumrah is recovering from back spasms, while Shami, following an ankle surgery, has been bolstering his match fitness through domestic tournaments. Shami's recent performances in the Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy suggest he is nearing full readiness.

Another point of interest will be whether Yashasvi Jaiswal earns a call-up. The young batter has impressed in 19 Tests and 23 T20Is since his debut in 2023.
