Xtra Time Web Desk: The first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 between India and Australia is set to feature a classic Perth wicket, offering pace and bounce to challenge batsmen on both sides. Scheduled to begin on November 22 at Optus Stadium, the pitch is expected to heavily favour fast bowlers, raising anticipation for an intense battle.

The media's first look at the pitch on November 18 revealed a lush green surface, heavily watered, with curators aiming to maintain Perth’s traditional fast-bowling traits. Head curator Isaac McDonald has prepared the wicket with around 10 millimeters of live grass to ensure good carry and a stern test for batsmen.

"We’re aiming for really good pace and bounce," McDonald said, noting that the surface shares similar clay and grass to the iconic WACA pitches. Optus Stadium, hosting only its fifth Test, aims to replicate the thrilling pace-friendly conditions that made Perth famous.

Last year, a similar pitch at Optus Stadium saw Pakistan bowled out for 89 in their second innings, with uneven bounce and cracks making life difficult for batsmen. McDonald hopes for a repeat, giving Australia’s formidable pace trio of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc an ideal surface.

India's challenge on a fiery track

India will rely on their own pace attack to counter Australia’s fiery conditions but face the challenge of adapting quickly without a practice match in these foreign conditions. The absence of Shubman Gill due to injury adds to India's selection headaches, with the No.3 spot likely to be filled by Devdutt Padikkal.

For India, starting strong on this fast, bouncy surface will require sharp adjustments and resilience against an Australian team primed to exploit their home advantage. The stage is set for an enthralling series opener that could set the tone for the rest of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
