KL Rahul doubtful for 5th test against England in Dharamshala

Xtra Time Web Desk: Uncertainty looms over KL Rahul’s availability for the upcoming Dharamsala Test as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), national selectors, and team management deliberate on potential player rest decisions for the final match of the series, set to commence on March 7. Despite being deemed 90 percent fit for the third Test in Rajkot in mid-February, Rahul has not fully recovered from his right quadriceps issue, stemming from surgery last year. Seeking expert opinion, he has been undergoing treatment for almost a week, possibly consulting a specialist in London.

The persistent stiffness in Rahul’s quadriceps, coupled with his vital roles in the team, has led the BCCI, selectors, and team management to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary risks. The decision on his participation in the Dharamsala game is still unclear, with the added consideration that India has already secured the series against England with a 3-1 lead. As of the current report, there is no confirmed return date for Rahul from London.

Having been rested as a precautionary measure after the first Test in Hyderabad and missing the second game in Visakhapatnam, the hope was for his return in the third Test in Rajkot, which did not materialize. The BCCI release ahead of the fourth Test stated, “KL Rahul is ruled out of the 4th Test. His participation in the final Test match in Dharamsala is subject to fitness.”

Rahul, a valuable asset for the team, is under careful management, participating only in Tests and ODIs as a keeper-batter. There is contemplation regarding his recall for T20Is, and he is also viewed as a key figure for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy later in the year. The BCCI’s previous statement on Rahul’s fitness at 90 percent indicates a probable participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he captains the Lucknow Super Giants. His performance in the league will likely influence his selection for the Twenty20 World Cup, playing a crucial role in the middle order and keeping wickets for his team.
