Jadeja all set to return in playing XI for 2nd test against Proteas in CapeTown | SAvsIND

Xtra Time Web Desk: As the Indian Cricket Team looks to embark on a positive journey in the new year and overcome the setbacks of 2023, crucial decisions wait for the second Test against South Africa starting at the Newlands stadium in Cape Town from Wednesday, January 3, 2024. With the team trailing 0-1 in the Test series, addressing shortcomings is paramount to level the series. India have played 6 test matches at the venue with the hosts winning 4 tests and drawing 2.

A notable change in the playing XI involves the return of Ravindra Jadeja, who missed the first Test due to an upper back spasm. Jadeja is expected to replace Ravichandran Ashwin. Despite Ashwin’s impressive record of scoring 5 Test centuries, his position at No 7 has been considered a compromise, impacting the team’s overall batting strength. Jadeja’s return is expected to add balance and solidity to the lineup.

Another critical decision revolves around the inclusion of Mukesh Kumar, as the Bengal seamer is known for his ability to swing the ball. Cape Town’s swing-friendly conditions make him an asset. However, the challenge lies in determining who he replaces in the playing XI.

The first Test exposed vulnerabilities in the Indian bowling attack, with Prasidh Krishna enduring a challenging debut, and Shardul Thakur struggling to make an impact. The burden of wicket-taking predominantly fell on Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. Rectifying this bowling imbalance becomes imperative for success in the second Test.

The absence of Ravindra Jadeja in the first Test compelled the selection of Ashwin. However, with Cape Town not favouring spin, a single-spinner strategy is likely. Consequently, Ashwin may find himself on the bench, making way for Jadeja’s return.

During the optional practice session in Centurion, focus was on Mukesh Kumar, raising the question of who he replaces in the playing XI. While Prasidh Krishna might seem an apparent choice after a challenging debut, dropping a player after just one Test may not send a positive signal. Therefore, the experienced Shardul Thakur, despite providing batting depth with three half-centuries in Australia and England, could be considered for exclusion.

Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid face the intricate task of balancing the bowling and batting strengths while making these crucial decisions. The second Test in Cape Town holds immense significance, and the playing XI will play a crucial role in India’s quest for a series-levelling victory.
