ISL 2023-24: MBSG appoint Antonio Habas as new Head Coach

Xtra Time Web Desk: Mohun Bagan Super Giant on Wednesday announced the appointment of Antonio Lopez Habas as the new Head Coach of the team. The club decided to part ways with Juan Ferrando, who guided the team to victory in the previous Indian Super League (ISL) season and the Durand Cup earlier in the current season. The decision comes amidst a recent dip in performance, particularly in the ISL, where Mohun Bagan SG managed only one win in their last four matches. This period saw the team score five goals while conceding eight, a departure from their strong, record-breaking start to the season.

“Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s head coach is changing. Juan Fernando is stepping aside. Antonio Lopez Habas is taking charge of the Green and Maroon in his place. He will handle the duties of the head coach for the upcoming Super Cup. Thanks to Juan Ferrando for winning the ISL (2022-23 season) and this year’s Durand Cup(sic.),” said Mohun Bagan in an official statement.

Antonio Lopez Habas, the current technical director, is set to take over as the head coach for Mohun Bagan SG, starting with the Kalinga Super Cup. Habas brings experience and familiarity to the role, having previously served as the head coach of the team. The change aims to rejuvenate the squad’s form and bring about positive results.

In addition to the domestic challenges, Mohun Bagan SG faced disappointment in the AFC Cup, failing to progress from the group stage. Defeats against Maldives’ Maziya and Bangladesh’s Bashundhara Kings contributed to their early exit from the continental competition. The management’s decision reflects a commitment to addressing the team’s recent struggles and re-establishing a winning momentum under the leadership of Antonio Lopez Habas.
