IPL 2024: Sunrisers Hyderabad shatter records with monumental 277-run total against Mumbai Indians in IPL showdown

Xtra Time Web Desk: It was a run feast at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad. Sunrisers Hyderabad creates history by posting a mammoth total of 277 runs, highest total in Indian Premiere League history against Mumbai Indians. A record breaking 523 total runs were made in a single T20 match. It was a total batting carnage from both the sides’ batters in match 8 of IPL 2024 at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad.

MI captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and opted to bowl first against SRH. Both captains had something to prove to their respective franchises with Cummins looking to justify his huge price tag of Rs 20.50 crore and Pandya hoped to get the crowd on his side which has been less than happy after he replaced Rohit Sharma as the Mumbai Indians captain this season.

SRH batting was powered by Travis Head’s record quickest half-century by a Sunrisers Hyderabad batter in just 18 deliveries, but it lasted only 20 balls as his fellow teammate Abhishek Sharma smoked a 16-ball 50 (fastest of the season) to lay the foundation of a record-breaking total in this high-scoring contest. They also registered their best ever powerplay score in the history of IPL for SRH as they reach 81/1 after 6 overs. In a contest where speedster Jasprit Bumrah failed to stage Mumbai’s comeback, in-form Heinrich Klaasen played a blinder of a knock as his 34-ball 80 fired SRH to 277-3 in 20 overs.

Youngster Kwena Maphaka got the nod ahead of Mumbai Indians’ captain Hardik Pandya and top bowler Bumrah as he led the bowling attack for the five-time champions in their match against SRH. Head, welcomed the 17-year-old by scoring 22 runs in his second over. After a tough start, Pandya, stepping in for the young pacer, redeemed himself by dismissing Mayank Agarwal for 11 runs off 13 balls in the fourth over. This decision of Pandya again paved the ways for the critics once again. As of why did Pandya not give the new ball to Bumrah when the SRH was all settled and going strong.

MI was tasked to chase down the all-time highest total in IPL’s history at Hyderabad. As a response they made 246 runs. Despite the high total on the board, Mumbai Indians started strong with the opening pair of Rohit Sharma (26) and Ishan Kishan (34) going off in the powerplay. Despite the loss of the openers, Tilak Varma (64) and Naman Dhir (30) looked to put MI in the game with regular boundaries till the middle overs. But regular wickets coupled with the lack of runs resulted in the home side coming out on top. At last, the efforts of MI batters did not matter.

SRH opens their account in the point table in style whereas, MI is yet to register their first win of the season.
