IPL 2024 Auction: Five overseas cricketers who can invite intense bidding war among the franchises

Xtra Time Web Desk: The much-anticipated IPL 2024 auction will be held in Dubai on Tuesday, December 19. It will be the first time in the history of the cash rich league that the auctions will be held outside India. As many as 333 shortlisted players will go under the hammer for a maximum of 77 slots. Out of these 333 players 215 are uncapped players. Let us look at 5 overseas players who can invite a bidding war among the franchises.

Travis Head (Australia): (₹2 crore) Travis Head’s consistent ODI performances for Australia, amassing 550 and 570-plus runs in the last two years, enhance his allure in the IPL auction. His impactful contributions in the World Cup semifinal and final, including a match-winning 137 against India, make him a sought-after prospect. Despite a modest IPL record with Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad, with ₹34 crore and three overseas slots after releasing Harry Brook, might be keen to secure the versatile Australian, especially given his ability to play both as an opener and in the middle order. Kolkata Knight Riders, with ₹32.70 crore and four available slots, could also target him after releasing two foreign players, Liton Das and Shakib Al Hasan. Head’s proficiency in adapting to various batting roles makes him a valuable asset, and his recent international success could drive a competitive bidding war in the IPL auction.

Mitchell Starc (Australia): (₹2 crore) – Mitchell Starc’s return to the IPL after eight years makes him a coveted asset for teams seeking experience and pace. The 33-year-old, who previously represented RCB in 2014 and 2015, boasts 34 wickets in 27 matches. Known for his accuracy, lethal yorkers, and the ability to generate movement, Starc’s versatility adds value. His stellar performance in the Cricket World Cup, claiming 16 wickets with a standout display in the semifinal and final, highlights his big-match temperament. With KKR releasing Southee and Ferguson, they are likely to bid for Starc, while Mumbai Indians, with ₹17.75 crore and four overseas slots, could also target him as an ideal new-ball partner for Jasprit Bumrah.

Rachin Ravindra: (₹50 lakh) – Rachin Ravindra emerges as New Zealand’s breakout star in the 2023 ODI World Cup, amassing a record-breaking 578 runs in his debut tournament and contributing five wickets with his left-arm orthodox spin. His versatile left-handed batting, adept back foot play, and proficiency against short deliveries make him an appealing prospect for the IPL. Despite a modest T20I record before the World Cup, Ravindra’s newfound confidence and precision in stroke play elevate his value. Rajasthan Royals, lacking a spin-bowling all-rounder, with ₹14.50 crore and three slots, appear poised to pursue the Kiwi star, whose T20I bowling credentials enhance his all-round capabilities.

Wanindu Hasaranga: (₹1.5 crore) Wanindu Hasaranga has established himself as a destructive force in T20 cricket, leading the bowling charts in the last two T20 World Cups and excelling in the Lanka Premier League. His remarkable stint with RCB in the IPL, claiming 35 wickets in 26 games, showcases his prowess. With a knack for clearing the fence, Hasaranga resembles Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan, making him a valuable all-rounder. SRH, seeking balance in their pace-heavy lineup, and Delhi Capitals, with ample funds and slots, are potential suitors. Paired with Kuldeep Yadav, Hasaranga could bring magic to Delhi’s bowling arsenal. The Sri Lankan’s multifaceted skills make him a sought-after asset in the IPL auction.

Gerald Coetzee: (₹2 crore) – South African pacer Coetzee is set for a grand IPL debut following his standout performances in the World Cup. The 23-year-old right-arm speedster, consistently clocking 140 kmph, emerged as the highest wicket-taker for South Africa with 20 scalps at an impressive economy of 6.23. A genuine wicket-taker with the ability to surprise batters with extra bounce, Coetzee has showcased his potential in franchise leagues, boasting 60 scalps in 42 games. Chennai Super Kings, seeking a young fast bowler, and RCB, under new head coach Andy Flower, are potential destinations. MI, if missing out on Starc, could also consider Coetzee.
