IPL 2019: What was MS Dhoni’s plan on a tough pitch against Rajasthan Royals?

XtraTime Web Desk: MS Dhoni’s highest individual score of 75 runs in just 46 deliveries in the history off IPL was the reason that Chennai Super Kings registered their third win on the trot after they beat Rajasthan Royals by 8 runs. At one stage CSK were on 27 for 3 and the pitch was quite tough to bat on. After that Dhoni held the innings with Suresh Raina (36) at first and then with Dwayne Bravo (27). Thanks to these two partnerships the home side reached a respective total of 175 for 5 in their allotted 20 overs.

After the match CSK skipper MS Dhoni too revealed that their primary aim was to get going throughout the innings as they were aiming to accelerate in the final overs off the game.”We wanted to get a partnership going – that was needed. We knew there was some dew on the field. We knew it would get easier as the game progresses. We bat quite deep – until 9 (Santner). We could accelerate in the last few overs, and we wanted to get a partnership going at that time,” said Dhoni at the post match presentation ceremony.

On being asked why they picked Mitchell Santner in the playing XI, Dhoni replied, “We have a stable XI and there were a lot less left-handers in the opposition, so we gave Mitch Santner a go. It isn’t that important to make changes if not necessary. As the tournament progresses everyone will get more chances,” added Dhoni.
