Xtra Time Web Desk : The Athletics Federation of India has taken a major step. India has placed a bid to host the upcoming 2024 Under-20 World Athletics Championships in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
However, there is a problem. The President of the National Federation, Adille Sumariwala, announced on Saturday that Peru had initially been awarded the responsibility of hosting the event in 2024 but they withdrew from the hosting duties.
Regarding this, Sumariwala stated, “Peru stepped back, leaving the bid for the World Athletics event. We have applied for it. However, two days ago, we had a conversation with World Athletics, and they informed us that Peru could return as the organizer. So, I am not sure what will happen. The matter has become complicated.”
Sumariwala also mentioned that the World Athletics Council meeting will take place on 12-13 August, where a decision will be made on whether Peru will be given the hosting responsibility or if it will be assigned to another country. It is worth mentioning that Sumariwala himself is a member of this council.
However, if Peru agrees to host the championship, India will have to withdraw its bid. Alternatively, if Peru and four or five other interested countries agree, India can host the 2024 Under-20 World Athletics Championships.
