India at Tokyo Olympics: World No.1 Amit Panghal crashes out after shocking loss to Colombian Martinez

India’s Amit Panghal has crashed out of Tokyo Olympics, losing to Colombia’s Yuberjen Martinez in pre quarter final on Saturday.

Xtra Time Web Desk: In one of the biggest upset, India’s Amit Pangal crashed out of the men’s 52kg boxing event at Tokyo Olympics on Saturday. World No 1 Panghal was stunned 1-4 to Rio Games silver-medalist Colombia’s Yuberjen Martinez in pre-quarter final bout.

Panghal, who was making his debut in Tokyo Olympics and was seeded top, had got an opening-round bye. One of India’s strongest medal contenders, Panghal was put under pressure by the sprightly Colombian in the opening round itself but the pre-bout favourite ensured that he connected better to claim the first three minutes 4-1.

On Friday, Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) became the first Indian boxer to secure a medal at the ongoing Games after advancing to the semifinals.

She defeated former world champion Nien-Chin Chen of Chinese Taipei in her quarterfinal bout.
